Letting Me Be Me

Every time my heart was hurt,

I left the world behind

Withdrew to heal,

to find new joy in life.

I grew stronger and more independent

Learned new skills as I was moving along

Life was good, my heart content.

But still,

There was a deep longing within.

A yearning to be held

To have someone to lean on

The place meant for him

Was calling his name.

Compatibility, to me, was the key

To the lock that held the doors tight.

Not every man would do

My soul had to feel he was right.

One day, by pure chance,

An ad sent me on an excursion

And to my surprise

Cracked open the walls I had built.

Tumbling down they went

And in slipped you

My knight, my hero

Unafraid of what had sent others to flee

Seeing me in all of my glory

Not minding that I’m wild and free

Letting me be me!
